Before Mustang purists start reaching for the pitchforks, Ford’s rumored four-door Mustang might be a little more interesting than the name alone suggests.
Ford reportedly showed dealers an actual four-door Mustang prototype during a private dealer meeting in Las Vegas, giving attendees one of the clearest looks yet at how the company could expand the Mustang lineup before the end of the decade.
According to reporting from The Wall Street Journal and Automotive News, the prototype resembles a stretched version of the current Mustang and could bring significantly more passenger room without abandoning the performance-focused character of the nameplate.
And some of the numbers reportedly being discussed are hard to ignore.

The idea of a four-door Mustang has been circulating inside Ford for years.
The name “Mach 4” has repeatedly been connected with the project, although Ford has not officially announced that name for a production model.
More importantly, the concept itself is not completely new. Ford has experimented with four-door Mustang design studies before, including sedan-style sketches that surfaced around the seventh-generation Mustang reveal.
That makes the latest dealer preview feel less like a random experiment and more like an idea Ford has been evaluating for some time.
Hybrid V8 Mustang Sedan?
Perhaps the biggest question is what would be under the hood.
Ford has not announced an official powertrain lineup, but multiple people familiar with the dealer presentation reportedly came away expecting hybrid power.
One source specifically described the possibility of a hybrid V8.
That could give Ford an interesting way to increase both performance and efficiency while keeping a V8 at the center of the higher-performance Mustang experience.
Reports have also suggested that an entry-level version could use a smaller EcoBoost powertrain, although detailed specifications remain unconfirmed.
If Ford can actually deliver a sub-$40,000 starting price while offering significantly faster versions higher in the lineup, the four-door Mustang could end up competing with everything from traditional sport sedans to significantly more expensive European performance cars.
Ford Hasn’t Made It Official Yet
Despite the increasingly detailed reports, there is still one major caveat.
Ford has not officially announced the four-door Mustang for production.
The company has maintained that it does not comment on future product speculation, and plans for vehicles this far from production can always change.
Current reports suggest the car could arrive before the end of the decade, potentially around the 2028 or 2029 model years.
Still, showing an actual prototype to dealers is considerably different from an internet rumor or an unofficial rendering.
Ford appears to be taking the idea seriously.
And if the reported targets are accurate, the conversation may ultimately become less about whether a Mustang should have four doors and more about whether enthusiasts would actually buy one.
